In his Annual Report for 1884, dated February 19th 1885,

Dr. Wharry in paragraph 13, wrote thus; "The strain upon the Medical

"Officer is somewhat relieved by the gratuitous assistance of Dr. "Marques, who is good enough to attend to urgent cases, when he chances

"to be at hand in the Superintendent's absence.

In that for 1885, Dr. Wharry referring to the Civil Hospital, stated in paragraph 11:- "At present its usefulness is very "much restricted, because there is only one Medical Officer to do all "the work, and with the best intentions one man cannot possibly accom- "plish all the Hospital work of a colony like Hong Kong.

"12. Governor Hennessy understood this, and appointed a

"; second Surgeon to the Hospital in 1880, but in 1883 Governor Bowen "removed him, and since then the patients have had to be contented

As Assistant Superintendent, I did all the work that was

ordered by the Superintendent; and in his absence, while he was at the Peak or indisposed, I took charge of the Establishment and of all the patients. It was not usual for the Superintendent to visit the patients on Sundays.'. It was also my duty to attend the cases sent by the Police and which required immediate treatment, such as different kind of wounds of poisoning, etc., etc. It was I who stitched all the large wounds,
